Saturday June 5th 2010 saw the official album launch of "Milonga" and a celebration of Mike's life. Many musicians, poets and artists came together to perform, exhibit their works and to share in a tribute to Mike ........ a very special man. You can see just some of the pictures of the evening (videos and audio will be posted here soon) that we hope reflected the evenings that Mike put on at the Blue Walnut Cafe. They say that as a musician you don’t choose music, music chooses you and this has been the case for Mike. Mike's greatest inspiration is the sound of the guitar, the incredible variety of tone, and the depth of expression which can be portrayed on this most beautiful of instruments.
"In calling his new album Milonga Mike said "I hope I have captured the essence of South American guitar music used to accompany dance - be it a romantic ballad or a lively tango. This is a collection of pieces for solo guitar by my favourite South American guitar composers. Milonga is not only an expressive form of South American dance but it also means a musical gathering or party where friends meet to dance and socialise; Both meanings are totally relevant to this album.
Two people have inspired me to make this album, Kevin Harding for his faith in me, time and devotion to this album; and my wife Trish for her belief, love and encouragement. Without either, this album would not exist."
We hope you will enjoy the short excerpts of each track in the listen page and consider purchasing the album - the proceeds of which will be donated to Cancer Research UK." To buy Mike's album click here or on the album cover
A recent review of Mike's new album by music journalist David Lowe commented "Before writing this piece, I allowed the exquisite sound of Mike's playing have a remarkably soothing effect on me. This is absolutely extraordinary virtuosity by a man with the dual gifts of technical expertise and expression. As a former guitarist myself, I have no hesitation in hailing Mike Edmonds as a genuine guitar maestro; a world class classical guitarist who, in any other age, would have been a household name.
It beggars belief that Milonga is his debut album. But perhaps this is a reflection of the fact that, these days, reality TV reigns supreme, while the truly talented, like Mike Edmonds, just get on with the job of making beautiful, meaningful and enduring music
