I composed this tune recently inspired by Mike's dignity, stamina and especially his musicianship during the recording of his album "Milonga". This is my personal tribute to a wonderful, respected and talented man who it was a privilege and honour to work with. RIP
Milonga - Jorge Cardoso is a classical guitarist and composer from Argentina. “Milonga” usually refers to an Argentine, Uruguayan, and Southern Brazilian form of music which preceded the tango and the dance form which accompanies it. However it is also used for places or events where the tango or Milonga are danced. Those who attend a Milonga are often referred to as “Milongueros”
Julia Florida (Barcarola) & Una Limosna (por el amor de Dios) - Augustin Barrios is an eminent Paraguayan guitarist/composer (1885 - 1944) and at the age of fifteen, became one of the youngest university students in Paraguayan history. John Williams has said of Barrios: "As a guitarist/composer, Barrios is the best of the lot, regardless of era. His music is better formed, it's more poetic, it's more everything! And it's more of all those things in a timeless way."
Valse Venezola, Carora & El Marabino by Antonio Lauro- Lauro was born in Venezuela. His father, an Italian immigrant, was a barber who could sing and play the guitar taught his son. A 1932 concert performed in Caracas by Agustín Barrios impressed Lauro (already an accomplished folk guitarist) so much that he was persuaded to abandon piano and violin in favor of the guitar. In 1986, he was presented with the Premio Nacional de Música, his country's highest artistic award.
Schottish Choro & Prelude No1 in E minor - Heiter Villa-Lobos born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is described as "the single most significant creative figure in 20th-century Brazilian art music". He wrote many orchestral, chamber, instrumental and vocal works and was influenced by both Brazilian folk music and by stylistic elements from the European classical tradition and played with many local Brazilian street-music bands and as a cellist in an opera.
Sons de Carrilhoes (Sound of Bells) - Joao Pernambuco a Brazilian viola player and blacksmith was a composing part time. As an illiterate musician, he gave his compositions to others to score resulting in many being stolen. Villa-Lobos helped to transcribe Pernambuco’s music, with this solo guitar piece becoming a signature composition played by classical guitarists in varying tempos.
